Now, everyone is always concerned about time, namely, having too little time. Too many things take up too much time. Errands take time, laundry takes time, meals take time. However, I would have to disagree with Mr. Franklin because of one crucial reason; Benjamin Franklin did not have the Internet. Since I don't believe this quote to be true, the question must be asked; how do I propose we win back our lost time? As far as I'm concerned, it is in this realm of free colouring pages that save the day. The first coloring book, "The Little Folks' Paint Book" was published in 1879. Crayola introduced the crayon in 1903. And the average American child spends 28 minutes a day coloring and wears down about 730 crayons by the age of 10. Between parents and schools, roughly 2.5 billion crayons are purchased each year. I can recall vividly my father introducing me to coloring in sheets as a hobby, and now I am doing the same with my child. Never mind how the world changes, our children nowadays love to color in just as much as we did when we were young. While art therapy was first practiced in the 1940s, the first research on using adult coloring pages as therapy is generally believed to have only begun as recently the mid-90s.
Coloring books for adults is an offspring of art therapy which is a mental health profession that is the process of making and creating artwork which intends to "explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem" (according to the American Art Therapy Association). So basically, it's similar to good old therapy. Also, art therapy is not only about mental health and improving yourself - it's a form of personal expression, as well. So prepare ahead of time and make sure that you've got enough distractions for the kids so that the trip will be uneventful in terms of fighting. Siblings don't usually like sharing stuff so you'll need at least two of everything. Two sets of crayons, two sets of coloring books. And it's probably best to make sure that both sets are exactly the same so that they don't get into an argument over the perception that Billy's coloring book is better than Casey's.
